Microcapsules
ArtBio

Brazilian Scientific Art Exhibition

2014

The microcapsules were produced at the Functional Products Laboratory (LAPROF/FZEA-USP) and analyzed at INFABiC (UNICAMP). LAPROF conducts research in Food Science and Technology, with an emphasis on the microencapsulation of food ingredients and bioactive compounds.

The image was obtained by confocal laser scanning microscopy (40× magnification) using Nile Red dye. The result is a vivid map of two coexisting phases: menthol in oil (red) and an aqueous xylitol solution (transparent), as captivating to the eye as it is informative to the scientist.
